Hart Island is the largest public cemetery in the country and has served New York City since 1869. Hart Island’s history is connected to many communities with important stories to tell. During the South Island Tour, Rangers will explore what Hart Island meant to the people who lived there, worked there, and were/are buried there. Walking the South Island includes discussion of an amusement park, military history, multiple pandemics, historic buildings and more.
